Lawn Care Tips
Professional guidance from Lozano's Green โ how to maintain a beautiful yard between our visits.
Mowing is the most fundamental lawn care task โ done right, it creates a lush, dense, healthy turf.
Follow the One-Third Rule
Never remove more than one-third of the blade length in a single mowing. Cutting too short (scalping) stresses the grass, exposes soil to sun, and invites weeds. For most Illinois lawns, keep cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass) at 3โ4 inches.
Mow in the Morning or Evening
Avoid mowing in peak afternoon heat when the grass is stressed. Morning is ideal once the dew has dried โ typically after 10 AM. Evening works well too, but leave enough time before dark for cut surfaces to dry.
Keep Blades Sharp
Dull blades tear grass rather than cut it cleanly, leaving ragged tips that turn brown and invite disease. Sharpen mower blades every 20โ25 hours of use, or at the start of each season.
Alternate Mowing Patterns
Mowing the same direction every time creates ruts and causes grass to lean in one direction. Rotate your pattern 90ยฐ each session โ rows, diagonals, and circles all work.
Leave Clippings on the Lawn
Unless clumping, leave clippings on the lawn. They decompose quickly and return nitrogen to the soil โ equivalent to one free fertilizer application per season.
Raise the Height in Summer
During hot, dry Illinois summers, raise your mowing height to 4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, reduces evaporation, and competes better against weeds.
